A family in Marietta dreamed of transforming their sloping, neglected backyard into a functional outdoor oasis. The existing space offered little more than uneven terrain and an aging wooden deck that had seen better days. Vista Building was commissioned to design and construct a comprehensive outdoor living area that would accommodate everything from casual family dinners to large social gatherings. Our team developed a multi-level design that addressed grading challenges while maximizing usable space. The result features a covered patio, outdoor kitchen, fire pit seating area, and lush landscaping—all seamlessly integrated to create a true extension of the home.
The covered patio serves as the centerpiece of this outdoor transformation. A cedar ceiling with recessed lighting creates warmth and ambiance, while ceiling fans ensure comfort even on warm Georgia days. The outdoor kitchen features a built-in gas grill, refrigerator, and ample counter space for food preparation. A bar seating area allows guests to interact with the cook while enjoying refreshments. This thoughtfully designed space extends the entertaining season well beyond summer months, providing shelter from sun and rain without sacrificing the pleasure of being outdoors.
A short walk from the covered patio leads to a circular fire pit area designed for evening gatherings. Built from natural stone that complements the home's architecture, the fire pit creates a natural focal point surrounded by comfortable seating. Gravel surfacing with integrated pathway lighting adds visual interest while ensuring safe navigation after dark. This space has quickly become the family's favorite spot for roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, and enjoying cool evenings. The fire pit area demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a previously unused corner into the heart of outdoor living.
Addressing the property's significant slope was a primary challenge solved through tiered retaining walls constructed from natural stone. These walls not only stabilize the terrain but also create distinct functional zones throughout the yard. Low-maintenance native plantings provide year-round color while reducing water usage. A gently winding path with gradual steps ensures accessibility for family members of all ages. Strategic landscape lighting highlights key features while extending usability into evening hours. This cohesive approach transforms a once-challenging yard into a beautiful, functional space that feels both intentional and effortless.
